Five Multi-Energy Truck Refuelling Hubs Are On Their Way

With the start of 2025 came some exciting news in the commercial truck and van industry. Aegis Energy, a UK-based company committed to building a clean refuelling and recharging hub network for commercial vehicles, has unveiled plans to develop five refuelling and recharging hubs in the UK.

These multi-energy hubs for commercial trucks and vans will provide a major boost to businesses and their drivers seeking reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable fuelling options while on the road, especially when travelling nationally.

Backed by a £100 million investment from Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners, this initiative is set to transform the UK’s commercial vehicle infrastructure. The hope is it will offer practical solutions and encouragement for fleet operators thinking about transitioning to cleaner energy sources sooner rather than later.

What are the refuelling hubs?

Designed to accommodate heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and commercial vans, these strategically placed stations will create a much-needed network of reliable refuelling and recharging points. The hubs will have the capacity for 40 trucks and 25 vans, with the power to refuel or recharge them all at the same time.

The five hubs will be located in Sheffield, Immingham, Warrington, Corby, and Towcester, with construction set to begin this year. The first hub is expected to open in early 2026, with all five up and running by the end of 2027.

Multi-fuel capabilities

Each hub will offer a variety of low-carbon energy sources, giving drivers and fleet operators multiple options to suit their needs and vehicles. Available fuels said to be included are:

  • Electric vehicle (EV) charging – this is essential, as it supports businesses in the shift towards electric fleets in line with the UK’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate.
  • Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) – a cleaner diesel alternative that reduces emissions without requiring vehicle modifications. This fuel is simple to switch to.
  • Hydrogen – an ideal zero-emission fuel source for long-haul and heavy-duty vehicles, once again helping businesses reach ZEV mandate targets.
  • Bio-compressed natural gas (bio-CNG) – this fuel is an increasingly popular option for reducing emissions while maintaining that all-important cost efficiency.

With such a diverse fuel offering, we think these hubs will be a game-changer for commercial vehicle sustainability. It’s hoped that they’ll give operators the flexibility to choose the best solution for their fleet with sustainability in mind.

Designed for drivers and fleet operators

Aegis Energy’s hubs go beyond simply refuelling and recharging – they are designed to improve and elevate the experience for drivers and fleet managers alike. Each site will accommodate the simultaneous charging or refuelling of over 40 HGVs and 25 vans, which is an incredibly impressive feat. This would significantly reduce waiting times and keep businesses moving.

Let’s have a look at what else these hubs will offer to create a better experience for the drivers themselves.

AdBlue supply

Along with charging and alternative fuels, the hubs will offer a supply of AdBlue. AdBlue is a diesel exhaust fluid, used to help certain diesel vehicles meet emission regulations. It’s non-flammable, non-toxic, and biodegradable, and its job is to remove harmful nitrogen-oxide from the tailpipe emissions. Vehicles that require AdBlue won’t run without it, so this supply at the hubs will be useful.

Secure parking

The hubs will provide a safe, designated space for drivers to park and refuel their vehicles. Amidst growing concerns over commercial vehicle security nowadays, this comes as a relief that will allow drivers to relax between journeys without worrying about cargo or vehicle theft.

Bookable electric charging bays

You’ll be able to plan ahead and book your electric van or truck charging bay in advance. This takes a lot of stress off the shoulders of fleet operators and drivers who may worry about a lack of space that could delay and derail journeys.

Toilets and shower facilities

These hubs are built for drivers, and it looks like their comfort is being put at the top of the priority list. Essential for long-haul journeys requiring drivers to spend extended hours on the road, the hubs will offer well-maintained, high-quality washrooms. This can do absolute wonders for a driver’s well-being and mood.

Quality food and rest areas

As mentioned above, comfort looks to be a key part of the hub experience. These stations are designed to be an ideal rest-stop, with plenty of access to food and areas to relax. A place to sit and rest with a good meal is essential to long-haul driver health, ensuring they’re able to continue on with their journey safely.

Will Aegis expand beyond five hubs?

Aegis Energy is already looking ahead, setting an ambitious goal of building up to 30 multi-energy hubs across the UK by the end of 2030. This expansion will provide even greater access to sustainable fuelling solutions, ensuring businesses of all sizes have the infrastructure needed to transition to cleaner, more efficient fleets and stay on the move without fuel concerns.

A practical step towards sustainability

For businesses that rely on commercial vehicles, be it one van or an entire fleet of trucks, sustainability isn’t just about reducing emissions – it’s about practical, cost-effective solutions that keep things moving. These new hubs promise to deliver just that, helping drivers and fleet operators cut costs, reduce downtime, and future-proof their operations.

With the demand for low-carbon transport solutions rising, we believe this investment marks an important milestone in the UK’s journey toward cleaner commercial transport. By making alternative fuels more accessible and convenient, Aegis Energy is helping businesses stay ahead in an evolving industry while easing their infrastructure concerns.
